How Mature is Business Continuity?

Business continuity management (BCM) is on the rise but is it maturing? In a recent OCEG poll, more than 75% of respondents indicated that their organization has a formal program for BCM, but answers to other questions in the poll might indicate that it isn’t really being taken seriously.

When asked what type of technology or software is used for BCM in their organizations, fully 55% of participants indicate that word processing or generic spreadsheets and document management tools are used. Only 20% are using any type of BCM software, either in a service model or installed on site.

And, in response to a question about how well the BCM capability is integrated with GRC capabilities that address governance, risk management and compliance, only 24% say there is extensive integration. This is the case despite a huge majority identifying numerous ways that the organization would benefit from greater integration, especially in BCM risk assessments, Business Impact Analysis, BCM program compliance and policy management, and mapping to strategic objectives.
